چکیده

One of the most pervasive problems in large-scale engineering projects is the difficulty in realistically visualizing models for evaluating the design and its visual appearance. The prohibitively high investment of using physical mockups has led to pre-assembly being performed almost entirely digital. Unfortunately, the vast complexity of full CAD datasets and the required realism can not be handled by available high-end graphics hardware. In this article we present a ray tracing based software system running on a scalable shared-memory architecture that allows for interactive high-quality visualization and evaluation of huge CAD models. Special features like cutting planes, model interrogation, sophisticated shading, lighting simulation previews, and collaborative remote visualization are also supported. The capabilities of our framework will be demonstrated using several practical examples from the collaborative design review of a Boeing 777 plus lighting visualization and evaluation of industrial design concepts from EADS.

Realtime Ray Tracing

Realtime ray tracing produces high quality images at interactive frame rates. While the realtime rendering domain is still dominated by raster graphics, realtime ray tracing recently has become much more powerful. This paper addresses the essence of realtime ray tracing: the various acceleration techniques which yield interactive performance, how coherence between rays can be exploited and effe...

Realtime ray tracing on current CPU architectures

In computer graphics, ray tracing has become a powerful tool for generating realistically looking images. Even though ray tracing offers high flexibility, a logarithmic scalability in scene complexity, and is known to be efficiently parallelizable, its demand for compute power has in the past lead to its limitation to high-quality off-line rendering. This thesis focuses on the question of how r...

A Parallel Ray Tracer

The graphics industry has advanced very far from the days of pixelated 2D images on small monitors. The main focus of graphics hardware work has been achieving the most realistic images while maintaining the interactive nature of realtime applications. This focus has matured and today’s modern graphics card is able to process millions of triangles and vertices to form complex 3D images with a v...

Realtime ray tracing and interactive global illumination

One of the most sought-for goals in computer graphics is to generate “realism in real time”, i.e. the generation of realistically looking images at realtime frame rates. Today, virtually all approaches towards realtime rendering use graphics hardware, which is based almost exclusively on triangle rasterization. Unfortunately, though this technology has seen tremendous progress over the last few...

GLuRay: Ray Tracing in Scientific Visualization Applications using OpenGL Interception

Ray tracing in scientific visualization allows for substantial gains in performance and rendering quality with large scale polygonal datasets compared to brute-force rasterization, however implementing new rendering architectures into existing tools is often costly and time consuming. This paper presents a library, GLuRay, which intercepts OpenGL calls from many common visualization application...
